The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is one of the oldest wines of Italy. The farmland and vineyards are known to exist as early as 789 A.D. and wine was already being exported from Montepulciano in 1350. The poet Francesco Redi dedicated an entire poem to the praise of ”the king of wines.”
While the name “Nobile de Montepulciano” was invented in the 1930s by one Adamo Fanetti, it is thanks to the dedicated work of generations of winemakers that the Montepulciano has formed an essential part of the landscape of Tuscan wines for centuries.
The Sangiovese, here called “prugnolo gentile”, is combined with the “canaiolo nero” grape to produce a masterpiece, the Nobile di Montepulciano.
Your day tour in discovery of the secrets of the Nobile di Montepulciano includes wine cellar visits to several award-winning estates, wine tastings, and lunch at a typical Tuscan trattoria in Montepulciano's historic center. Your excursion concludes with a visit to the early Renaissance jewel, Pope Pius II’s ambitious humanist project for the ideal city, Pienza.
